Use this general checklist to think through a temporary loss of electricity.

Before an outage

Know how to receive official local outage and safety updates.Keep phones and power banks charged when practical.Know where household flashlights and spare batteries are stored.Consider needs of powered medical or accessibility equipment and ask the provider about backup arrangements.Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible during an outage.

During an outage

Use battery-powered lighting where possible and follow local fire-safety guidance.Unplug or switch off sensitive appliances if advised, leaving one light on to notice when power returns.Check on household members or neighbours who may need support, if it is safe to do so.Follow official advice about food safety, water service and travel.Keep clear of damaged electrical equipment and downed power lines; report hazards to the local utility or emergency service.

After power returns

Wait for official or utility guidance before assuming power is fully restored.Check food safety using local public-health advice; discard food if its safety is uncertain.Recharge devices and restock used batteries or supplies when it is safe.Report damage or continuing service issues to the relevant utility.

Never approach downed power lines or damaged electrical equipment. Do not use generators, grills or fuel-burning devices indoors or in enclosed spaces. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and local emergency guidance.
